Histology
We offer bespoke staining to answer model- and target-specific questions.
Our Histology Services
Collaborative histology and pathology services to support and advance drug discovery programmes. We offer both routine capabilities and bespoke protocol development to enable the advancement of standalone or preclinical endpoint samples through histopathological analysis.
The team has extensive experience processing a range of tissues from multiple species, including human. We can perform a customised panel of immunohistochemistry (IHC) and tinctorial markers to investigate disease state and evaluate compound efficacy.
What We Do

Sample processing
- Expert dissection & necropsy skills
- Cell harvesting to produce agar pellets or membrane culture matrix processing
- Conventional tissue processing of both formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) or frozen tissues
- Production of high-quality microscope slides by cryotomy or microtomy
TINCTORIAL STAINS
- Standard Haematoxylin & Eosin (H&E)
- Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS), +/- diastase
- Masson’s Trichrome
- Elastic van Gieson (EVG)
- Perl’s Stain
- Toluidine Blue
- Alcian Blue

IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY (IHC)
- Staining of mouse, rat and human tissue
- Chromagenic (DAB) or fluorescence detection methods
- Established in-house protocols
- Inflammatory cell profiling
- Cell turnover markers
- Human cell tracking in animal models
- Bespoke IHC method development
EXPERT ANALYSIS
We work with an independent experimental histopathologist consultant who has more than 30 years experience in drug discovery and large pharma. We are able to offer expertise in target expression validation, model profiling, and compound efficacy assessment in pre-clinical studies. We are able to hold human tissue to perform disease profiling and mechanistic pathway investigations.

Our Approach to Histology
Our experienced technical staff perform bespoke staining panels to answer the key questions. Animal, human and cell-based samples are processed to produce:
- Standard H&E to assess tissue morphology and allow comparison to literature
- Tinctorial stains for specific tissue changes; e.g. PAS to detect mucus distribution in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF)
- IHC for identification of specific cell populations, determination of drug target distribution, or comparison to human disease
The generated slides can be delivered to the client’s pathologist or reviewed by our consultant pathologist. We offer both quantitative measurements and counts, as well as qualitative analysis.
