Research Scientist – Antibody Discovery (Protein Sciences)

About RxBiologics

The RxCelerate group of companies provides a platform for out-sourced drug discovery and development services and has a client base ranging from virtual biotech companies to some of the top 15 global pharmaceutical companies. We design and deliver complete drug development programmes from inception through to clinical studies. RxBiologics is a subsidiary of RxCelerate with a focus on delivery of biologics drug discovery. Our aim is to become the antibody drug developer of choice for the UK’s venture backed biotech start-ups and outsourced pharma projects.

RxBiologics has an excellent opportunity for enthusiastic and motivated scientists to join us and expand our services to support our growing client base. We currently have a position available, based within the RxBiologics team at the Babraham Research Campus, a leading site within the Cambridge biotechnology hub.

The Role

The successful candidate will join our team of scientists supporting client antibody drug discovery programmes and internal technical development. They will primarily perform molecular biology, protein production in mammalian or bacterial systems, purification and characterisation experiments. They may additionally provide support in phage display selections and antibody profiling when required. This is a full-time, lab-based role working under supervision. Practical training will be provided to enable the successful candidate to develop and apply their technical knowledge for the generation of new biologic therapeutics. A pro-active approach, exceptional team-working and motivation to learn are key qualities required for this position.

Main responsibilities

  • Design and generation of protein expression constructs.
  • Application of molecular biology techniques including cloning and sequence analysis.
  • Routine expression and purification of antibodies/antibody fragments.
  • Production and QC of recombinant proteins to support antibody discovery campaigns.
  • Performing antibody/protein characterisation assays e.g. ELISA, affinity determination.
  • Provision of cross-functional support under supervision.
  • Analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Maintenance of accurate experimental records and delivery of high-quality reports.
  • Assist with general laboratory duties.

Essential Skills/Requirements

  • PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant biological science and preferably at least a year’s laboratory-based experience gained within the biotechnology or pharmaceutical sector.
  • Skilled in molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid preparation, PCR, cloning and sequence analysis.
  • Experience of protein expression using bacterial and mammalian systems.
  • Experience of protein purification and characterisation (e.g. SDS PAGE, western blotting and SEC analysis).
  • Knowledge of plate-based immunoassays (ELISA) and affinity determination methods such as SPR.
  • Ability to conduct experiments following standard protocols and accurately interpret data.
